If we had to resume “Spencer” in one word, that word would be unexpected. The making of another film on Princess Diana’s life, the casting of Kristen Stewart and focusing the story on only three days of her life, all unexpected yet brilliantly executed.
The director Pablo Larraín, highly-regarded for “Jackie” (2016), succeeds in telling Princess Diana’s story and with a deep dive into etiquette of the British monarchy through outstanding cinematography, poetic colorimetry and breathtaking costumes.
Kristen Stewart is superb as Diana, embodying the qualities of 'People's Princess' as Diana became known. The actor said during an interview that she was able to get into Diana’s mind because they had a similar way of dealing with public exposure. She was a surprise choice for the role but has certainly lived up to the challenge. No doubt she was helped by writer Steven Knight's decision to focus not on what had been written or filmed before but on unearthing the truth in the unique details that could only be shared by people who knew her.
The film presents the internal working of Diana's mind in a way that pushes the viewer out of their comfort zone. We are lured into the nightmare she lived through; the isolation and paranoia developed, the less than compassionate responses from the Royal Family and the constant scrutiny of the paparazzi and the public. It also encapsulates Diana’s role as a mother, how she placed her children above anything else, not even the freedom she longed for so much.
“Spencer” honours Diana, placing the audience at the centre of her turbulent life as a royal.
The movie is coming out in the UK on the 5th of November 2021.
